After cycling 26600 KM through the whole continent of Africa, from Zürich to Cape Town, I didn't want to simply fly back. The journey took almost two years, so I needed an equivalent "slow traveling" way home. That's why I took a cargo ship, a multipurpose vessel with bulk and containers, to sail during 20 days back from the port of Cape Town until Rotterdam. We stopped in Walvis Bay (Namibia) and Vigo (Spain). This video goes slowly, just like the trip. Our speed was between 20 and 30 km/h. The Union Pacific's Chicago and Northwestern Heritage engine, UP 1995 along with C&NW 8701 run light by Malta, Illinois. An EMD SD70ACe and a GE C44-9W. One time where UP MoW worked in my favor. The 1995 originally got past me. But due to some problems at the Malta crossover, all rail traffic in both directions was stopped. So I was able to get ahead of it and set up at Malta. Thanks to Jason for the tip on this. Also, a big hello to young railfan Owen. Owen and his dad were also waiting for the 1995 and 8701 at Malta. As with most six-year-olds there was a lot of energy on display. But Owen kindly kept quiet for the video cameras while 1995 and 8701 rolled by. Thanks buddy.

Part two of the video resumes where we left off with the Atkinson Borderer artic water tanker passing Valletta's bus station. In this part we can see an immaculate AEC Mk V Mammoth Major 8 owned by 'Edible Oils', It's appearance is in marked contrast to the beaten about MM6s to be enjoyed thrashing and mauling their way out of a stone quarry. There's also a longish scene which shows a well over-weight 'Tilt Cabbed' Mandator in a bottom gear assault on the climb from Mgarr harbour... I seem to recall the load being bagged sand. The video finishes with a fresh out of the box Scammell Routeman fuel tanker. Hope you enjoy.
Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It's a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and British. It has numerous fortresses, megalithic temples and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to circa 4000 B.C. The capital of Malta is Valletta, which at 0.8 km2, is the smallest national capital in the European Union by area.Malta has one national language, which is Maltese, and English as an official language.Malta's location in the middle of the Mediterranean has historically given it great strategic importance as a naval base, and a succession of powers, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Gr...

The first part of a video recorded during April of 1994 showing many and various ex UK lorries going about their business in Malta and adjoining island Gozo. Once commonplace former British types including AEC, Albion, Leyland, Bedford, Ford, Scammell, Guy and Coles cranes are seen. The recording gets under way with one of the last mentioned suspended in mid air ... but still ticking over after having over-reached itself. There's a little sequence of an elderly Guy making a scene when asked to remove itself from a small muddy rut, in the end help is accepted from a small bulldozer. Half the trouble was that it's prop shaft to the rear drive axle had been removed making the once 6x4 into a 6x2. Part two will follow shortly afterwards if this upload succeeds!

Mario Galea's L12 powered AEC Mammoth Major is seen climbing a long drag with a full load in May 2011. This lorry was new in the UK as HRL262L, and still has the original tipper body fitted with the sides cut down slightly.
A cargo ship or freighter is any sort of ship or vessel that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of cargo carriers ply the world's seas and oceans each year, handling the bulk of international trade. Cargo ships are usually specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes. Today, they are almost always built by welded steel, and with some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped. General cargo vessels carry packaged items like chemicals, foods, furniture, machinery, motor- and military vehicles, footwear, garments, etc. Tankers carry petroleum products or other liquid cargo. Dry bulk carriers carry coal, grain, ore and other simila...
